What Does the Generative AI Performance Report Measure?
The report answers a narrow but newly measurable question: how often did a link from this Search Console property appear in a supported generative AI feature on Google Search? Google calls those appearances impressions. The report is not a transcript of every generated answer, a keyword ranking table, or a list of citations phrased the way an AI-tracking vendor might present them. It is Google’s own property-level record of eligible link visibility inside the experiences it names.
That distinction makes the report valuable. Before this dedicated view, owners had to infer much of their Google AI exposure from blended Search performance, manual observations, or external monitoring. The new surface separates generative AI impressions so a team can inspect whether visibility is rising, which canonical pages receive it, where viewers are located, what devices they use, and how the pattern changes over time. It turns a vague claim that a site is “showing up in AI” into a defined Google metric with documented boundaries.
The metric should still be described precisely. An impression means a link to the property was shown to a user in a supported feature. It does not mean the person read the full generated response, recognized the brand, opened the link, called the business, or became a customer. Those are later events in a measurement chain. Treating all of them as equivalent would convert a useful exposure signal into an unsupported revenue claim.

Which Google AI Experiences Are Included?
Google currently lists AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Search report. That wording matters because the supported set can change as products develop. A responsible dashboard should preserve the report date and the feature definition used at that time rather than presenting today’s coverage as a permanent taxonomy. Search Labs experiments are not included, so a manually observed experimental answer may have no corresponding row in this production report.
Search and Discover also have dedicated generative AI reports. They should not be merged casually. Search offers the device dimension and property or page aggregation rules described in the Search documentation. Discover has its own documentation and behavior. If a team combines exports for an executive view, the source report and aggregation method should remain visible so unlike totals are not treated as interchangeable.
The report’s dedicated view does not mean generative AI is disconnected from ordinary Search measurement. Google says this visibility is included in the overall performance report while the dedicated report provides a clearer generative AI view. How Should You Read the Chart and Table?
Start with the chart as a property-level trend. Google explains that when two results from the same property appear in a generative AI feature, they count as one property impression in the chart total. Add a URL filter and aggregation changes to the URL. This makes the chart suitable for trend direction, but it also means the top-line number is not a simple sum of every visible link instance.
Use the table to find the components of that trend. Page rows are aggregated by page, while country, device, and date rows are aggregated by property. Because the chart and table can use different aggregation, their totals can differ without either surface being broken. Exported values shown as unavailable symbols become zero, so retain the export date and note that conversion when a downstream dashboard treats zero as a measured absence.
Give the newest period time to settle. Google can mark preliminary data with a dotted line because collection is still in progress. A same-day decline should not trigger a rewrite campaign. Review the documentation and known data issues, compare a stable period, then ask whether the change is broad or concentrated on a few pages. What Does the Report Not Prove?
It does not prove why Google selected a page. The report exposes impressions and dimensions, not the internal ranking logic, retrieval path, query fan-out, or weighting that produced an appearance. Google explicitly warns that third parties do not have access to its internal ranking or AI systems. The honest next step after seeing visibility is to inspect the page and its public evidence, not to reverse-engineer a secret score from one chart.
It does not provide complete lead attribution. A site can receive an impression without a click, and a person can later return through branded search, a map listing, a direct visit, or a phone call. Conversely, a page can influence a decision without a neat last-click trail. GSC supplies a first-party visibility signal; analytics and business systems supply other pieces. A joined dashboard can organize those pieces, but the join does not automatically establish causation.
It does not define a universal good impression rate. The denominator, eligible query universe, rollout access, brand demand, service area, page inventory, and customer journey differ by property. Comparing raw totals between a national publisher and a local contractor would be misleading. Establish the property’s own baseline, segment the pages that matter, and judge whether visibility is moving toward qualified business questions.
The safest executive summary therefore has three lines: the verified exposure change, the pages or markets that explain it, and the next test. It should also name what remains unknown.
